In 2016, EUR 451,400 have been earmarked in the Latvian Foreign Ministry’s budget for bilateral development cooperation, and the money will be used for new grants and long-term projects, including support to Ukraine in agriculture and the fight against corruption, informs LETA, according to the Development Cooperation Policy Plan for 2016 presented at the meeting of state secretaries.

A grant tender will be organized for development cooperation projects in the EU Eastern Partnership countries – Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine – as well as in Central Asian countries – Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan. A tender will also be organized for co-financing to development cooperation and development education projects by NGOs, social partners and local governments that have been granted financing under the EU external action instruments and other international assistance donors.

Projects, which have been granted at least 50% co-financing from other donors, will also be implemented. For example, projects for assistance to Ukraine in agriculture and the fight against corruption as well as for assistance to Uzbekistan in improving customs procedures will be carried out with a 50% co-financing from the US aid fund for new donor projects. Financial support will continue to the training program for representatives of the European Neighborhood Policy countries, Central Asia and Western Balkans at the Riga Graduate School of Law, and scholarships will be offered to Ukrainian students studying at the University of Latvia.

Latvia will also implement a project by the Latvian State Audit Office to help Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine to strengthen the capacity of their supreme audit institutions. Financing has been planned for participation of Latvian experts in larger projects funded by other international assistance donors.

NGOs and the Latvian Association of Local Government will receive support for events and projects intended to increase public awareness of and public support to the development cooperation policy and its objectives, including participation in the EU development cooperation platforms.
