Former New Zealand Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand on Thursday launched a law review compiled by the School of Law from the University of Fiji.

The faculty hopes that it would provide new ideas that will spark debate among the law community in Fiji.

Sir Anand, who was accompanied by his wife Lady Susan, said the launching of the review was a reflection of the coming of age of the School of Law of the university.

“The content of the law review is evidence to the world at large of a law school achieving maturity and confidence that stand by its people in producing a tangible item which will go on to show the competence of lawyers and judges and researchers and even the general reading public,” Sir Anand said.

School of Law Dean Professor Shaista Shameem said the idea of compiling a law review came about eight years ago in 2009.

She said after discussions they had to solidify their law programme before they could launch a law review.

“Other things got in the way, we had to develop our programme and make it solidified, make it really strong so it has not been until this year that we have the resources and the ability, the support as well from the university to be able to launch something,” Professor Shameem said.

“It is an online journal and it will be available to everybody free of charge and it will have critical analysis of legal matters, analysis of court cases that are important for our students to understand, there will be intellectual exchange of ideas which I think we really need in Fiji so the University of Fiji law review fills the gap that we have currently in terms of intellectual development of the law.”
