Ms. Pentcheva was born and raised in Bulgaria. In 1999, she immigrated to the United States, where she obtained bachelor's degrees, magna cum laude, in engineering, mathematics, and political science from the University of St. Thomas, and received a Presidential Scholarship to attend William Mitchell College of Law, where she obtained her Juris Doctor degree. Ms. Pentcheva is currently pursuing a Master of Laws Degree in Intellectual Property Law with high honors from The George Washington University Law School.
A go-to resource in intellectual property law, Ms. Pentcheva has been a Patent Counsel at PayPal, Inc. since 2016. In that role, she works with engineers to encourage innovation, conducts innovation-capture and invention-disclosure sessions with inventors, prepares and prosecutes patent applications, counsels business units with respect to strategic partnerships, advises business leaders and project managers in connection with mergers and acquisitions, manages outside counsel, and interfaces with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Previously, she was an Associate Patent Attorney with the international law firm K&L Gates, LLP at the firm's headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and before that, she was a Patent Attorney with Westman, Champlin & Koehler, P.A. in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Additionally, she was an Adjunct Professor of Law at Mitchell Hamline School of Law, and was recently nominated to serve on the School's Intellectual Property Law Advisory Board. She was also the President of the Board of Directors of a non-profit corporation in the State of Minnesota with an operating budget of 10 million dollars.
A respected voice in the legal field, Donika was appointed as an Advisor to the Uniform Law Commission's Study Committee on Bad Faith Patent Demand Letters, which was charged with considering the need for, and feasibility of, enacting uniform or model state legislation concerning bad faith patent demand letters. She is an alumna of The Honorable Jimmie V. Reyna Intellectual Property American Inn of Court. Ms. Pentcheva holds leadership positions in a number of professional organizations, including the American Bar Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association, in connection with which she has appeared before, and submitted written comments to, the United States Congress, the Executive Branch, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the United States Copyright Office, the International Trade Commission, and other federal and international agencies. She has also co-authored an amicus curiae brief to the United States Supreme Court.
She has been named a 2017 Lawyer of Distinction, and was honored as being among the top 10% of lawyers in the United States. Looking toward the future, Ms. Pentcheva intends to continue contributing to the improvement of the intellectual property systems of the United States and countries around the world.
