Chandigarh: Haryana-cadre IAS officer Vijay Singh Dahiya has been selected for the ‘Best Overall Student Award’ by Kings College, London, from where he completed his M Sc in public policy and management in 2016-17. Kings College is considered among the top 25 universities of the world. Dahiya will share the award with another student, Emilie, from the Netherlands. The Centre had sponsored Dahiya’s study in London. He cleared the course with distinction. He secured a very high score in his dissertation on ‘Digital governance and network governance in urban local bodies of Haryana’. Before joining the civil services, Dahiya did his B Tech in electrical engineering from IIT, Bombay. The 2001-batch officer is posted as the Director General of the Department of Higher Education with an additional charge of the Labour Commissioner. 

Become job creators, students urged

Sonepat: Prof Rajindra Kumar Anayath, Vice-Chancellor, DCR University of Science and Technology, Murthal, has exhorted students to become job creators instead of job seekers. He was speaking at an orientation programme on entrepreneurship. The programme was organised under the Pradhan Mantri Yuva Yojana. The VC claimed the university was trying to provide a platform to students to exhibit their talent through entrepreneurship. Manu Sakunia, nodal manager, said the university was among 237 premier educational institutes in the country selected in the first phase of the scheme. Its aim is to provide skills, information and network to students.

Open education goes online 

Sonepat: The Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC) system will be introduced through the SWAYAM platform for all postgraduate courses at BPS Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Khanpur Kalan, from the upcoming academic session in July. Ipshita Bansal, Dean of Academic Affairs, said a workshop had been organised at the university to train teachers about the online system of education — MOOC and SWAYAM. She said courses related to 989 subjects had been uploaded on the SWAYAM platform and 18.04 lakh students across the country had been registered. 

Her paintings speak of girls’ concerns

Rohtak: Kiran Kundu, a student of MA (drawing and painting) at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) here, has been voicing the concerns of girls through her paintings as well as theatre performances. Apart from making numerous paintings on women’s empowerment, she has written, directed and acted in several plays highlighting their plight. Kiran is a poet as well. “My poems target the double standards prevalent in our society and strive to eradicate social evils which make girls suffer,” she says and adds parents should support their daughters in realising their dreams.

Moot court: Students bag top honours

Panipat: Students of the Geeta Institute of Law won the second national Hindi moot court competition held at Amity Law School, Noida, on Friday. The national competition was held from March 14 to 16. Students from 26 law schools and colleges, including top law universities in the country, participated. The moot court was based on criminal law. The team, comprising Shanu Sharma, Rishabh Aggarwal and Aashish Kumar, won the competition, and received a trophy and cash award. Nishan Bansal, vice-chairman of the Geeta Institute of Law, and members of the college management welcomed the winning team.

In service of farmers 

Hisar: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kurukshetra, affiliated to Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) here, has bagged the best institution award of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Rashtriya Krishi Vigyan Protsahan Puraskar 2017. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conferred the award to HAU Vice Chancellor Prof KP Singh in New Delhi on Saturday. The university spokesperson said Kurukshetra’s KVK was chosen as the best institution among 60 KVKs in zone 2 of the region. It has been promoting zero-budget natural farming. It has helped about 100 SC families to be self-sufficient by promoting mushroom production in Yari village of Kurukshetra district and encouraged farmers not to burn stubble.
